• Have a local emergency number saved on your mobile phone or device. From your mobile dial 112 if your phone is charged and has a signal.
• Check in with the tourism association to confirm the safety of your accommodation and the load shedding schedule for the area you are staying in.
• Keep those valuables out of sight and out of mind unless you want to lose them or have a good insurance policy.
• Don't accept help at the atm while drawing heaps of cash or share your pin because you are feeling generous.
• Do not leave valuables unattended, especially your children.
• Try to stay in well-lit areas or risk injuries. Do not park in that dark spot unless your partner has asked you to.
• Keeping your passport and any extra visa cards locked away is a good idea especially if you plan on returning someday.
• Be aware of strangers approaching your vehicle if they are armed or selling fruit.
• Maintain enough space between the vehicles in front of you so you can change lanes quickly if you don't have enough small change on your person for the fruit seller or that armed stranger that needs your motor vehicle.
• Doors and windows should be locked and closed if you have an air-conditioned hotel room where you don't have to pay for the electricity bill.
Tourism street smarts have encouraged many of the local and international visitors to the Wine lands area of the Western Cape to return again and again. If not because of the fine wine and cultural attractions but because they survived it.
They enjoyed their time here and did not have any safety issues for concern because they were wise enough to follow their instincts, instructions and informed safety officials and local hosts.
While these commonsense precautions should prevail in any new city slum, we appreciate the first-time travellers who will need a quick tour of their surroundings and how a toolbox talk is never wasted on those that listen to it.
So, sit tight, put on your safety belt, and remove your dentures if need be. Below are the highlights.
A reminder of some of the basic safety tips

We believe in the best of our fellow human beings but need to be mindful of our surroundings. If you feel unsafe then change the playground or your new friends. Please be respectful of the advice from local guides, visible safety officers if they are around and your hosts because your hard-earned money is helping our natural resources stay off the endangered species list.
